Abstract:
Evaluation of outbreak and incidence of lice in domestic chickens as a food source of villagers and less developed areas is one of the most important health concerns. The aim of this study was to study the prevalence and outbreak of different species of lice in native birds of Shahrekord and suburban areas. Data collection started from November 2017 to May 2018 from 230 native birds of Shahrekord city and suburban areas in Chaharmahal-va-Bakhtiari province. Samples were transferred to the clinic of the Veterinary Medicine Faculty, Shahrekord University. The identification method was performed using optical microscope and diagnostic keys. The results of this study indicate that 65 percent (150 infected specimens) of birds were infested with lice. The pest species and the infestation frequencies were recorded as 42 cases of Menacanthus stramineus, 38 cases of Menopon gallinae, 46 cases of Goniodes dissimilis and 24 cases of Magnina cubitalis. Some of sampled birds, were infested with more than one louse species. Monitoring and controlling fowl lice infestation in suburbs areas would be necessary to reduce damage to native poultries and to increase domestic food production sustainability. On the other hand, this could be a milestone in self-sufficiency in local community food production.
