Abstract:
One of the main concerns and obstacles in mass rearing of parasitoids is low efficacy and poor technique in this industry. It is known that adult feeding can improve performance of natural enemies in mass rearing systems. Therefore, the objective of current study was to determine the role of commercial honey, glucose, sucrose, fructose and their mixture on life table parameters of Habrobracon hebetor Say. First a colony of the wasp was established at lab conditions. Treatments included 30% concentration of fructose, glucose, honey and their combined concentrations (1.1.1) in distilled water. Stock culture of H. hebetor was established on the fifth instar larvae of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller. The values of net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic and finite rates of increase (λ, r), birth rate (b) and death rate (d) were highest on mixed solution treatment and the doubling time (DT) was the lowest. Moreover, the gross reproductive rate (GRR) and generation time (T) had the highest values in glucoses and focuses treatments, respectively. Under laboratory conditions mixed sugars had best effects on lifetable parameters. Similarly, the r values in control and fructose, glucose, honey and their combined concentrations were 0.0207, 0.212, 0.0207, 0.0204 and 0.231(day-1), respectively. In general, glucose treatment was more effective on the parasitoid biological traits compared to that of fructose and honey. Lower performance of the wasps in honey treatment could be due to the quality of honey and should be considered for further investigation. Results could be used for H. hebetor rearing in mass production centers.
