Abstract:
This study was carried out to evaluate the capability of combining gamma radiation and essential oil from Cuminum cyminumn L. on mortality rate of Trogoderma granarium larvae at 27±1° C, 65± 5% RH and absolute darkness. Three experimental regimes were designed as: 1) Application of gamma radiation and essential oil simultaneously, 2) Fumigation of irradiated adults after 3 days, and 3) Irradiation of fumigated adults after 3 days. Radiation doses of 900 to 1000 Gy were applied in combination with 44.52, 73.92 and 152.32 μl/l of essential oil for the 10-15 days old larvae. Mortality was assessed 24 hours after the first treatment. The results showed significant synergistic effect of combination of gamma radiation with C. cyminum essential oil on T. granarium larvae. The best combination was the third regimes, where the fumigated larvae with 3 doses of essential oil, irradiated by gamma radiation with the doses of 900 and 1000 Gy suffered 100% mortality after 35 days. In contrast, the application of gamma radiation (1000 Gy) alone caused 36.66% mortality in T. granarium after 35 days. The results indicated the acceptable combined effect of gamma radiation with C. cyminumn essential oil in management of T. granarium larvae. It was shown that the best interaction was obtained when fumigated larvae were exposed to irradiation.
