Abstract:
This research was carried out to study the effect of planting date on the infestation severity and damage of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) and also to investigate the reaction of three maize hybrids to the pest on different planting dates. Therefore, a factorial experiment was designed with 2 main factors including insecticide spraying and non-spraying against O. nubilalis apilitedwith two subfactors factors of sowing date at three levels (including cultivation on 25th April, 10th May and 25th May) and maize variety in three levels (including KSC705, KSC704 and KSC706 hybrids) based on the randomized complete block design with four replications in two years in the Agricultural Research Station of Moghan. To evaluate the infestation and larval damage rate of the pest, the number of holes in the stem, the length of the holes created in the stem, and the number of broken stems due to the pest damage were recorded and analyzed. Based on the two-year average, the mean grain yield of hybrids was 13.27 and 11.49 t/ha in spray and non-spray conditions, respectively, indicating that the corn stem borer reduced 16.28% grain yield. Comparison of grain yield mean for two years showed that there was no significant difference among the hybrids in the sprayed condition, however, among the non-sprayed condition, hybrid KSC706 with 12.19 t.ha-1 had significantly higher grain yield compared with those of hybrids 704 (11.38 t/ha) and 705 (10.78 t/ha). The minimum grain yield reduction (9.3%) by European stem borer belonged to Hybrid KSC706. In terms of planting date, in both years, the best planting date was 25th May comparing all treatments. Based on the two-year average of traits, the hybrid KSC706 had the lowest number of holes in the stem and number of broken stems caused by the pest. According to the results, the KSC706 hybrid was a highly productive and tolerant hybrid against O. nubilalis.
