Abstract:
The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the economically most important pests on a wide range of crops in greenhouses and orchards worldwide. Control of T. urticae has been largely based on the use of chemical pesticides. It has recently become a more serious problem due to continuous pesticide use. In addition, the rise of resistance among mite populations necessitates the use of pesticides that are compatible with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Mentha piperita L. plant extract on T. urticae population under laboratory conditions. This study, evaluated the sublethal (LC10, LC20, and distilled water) effect of Mentha piperita L. herbal extract on life table parameters of T. urticae. The lethal and sub-lethal concentrations in this study were calculated using bioassay experiments and leaf-dipping method. Experiments were conducted at laboratory condition of 25 ± 2 ºC, 60 ± 5 % RH, and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L:D). The raw data were analyzed based on two-sex life table analysis. Based on the results of dose-response bioassay, the applied values for these concentrations were 2700 and 3550 ppm, respectively. The results demonstrated that by increasing the experimental concentration from LC10 to LC20, a significant decline was recorded in the duration of biological maturation for both sexes (male and female) of the TSSM. The value of the life expectancy (exj for female in control treatment) parameter 13.52 days for the tenth day, while this value was obtained 11.1 days at the ninth day for female in LC20 treatment. The highest value fertility (vxj) parameter was recorded 22.7 day-1 and 19.3 day-1, for control and LC20 treatments, which was recorded on 13 and 12 day, respectively. The highest rate of mortality recorded for egg stage of LC20 concentration, between different stages was calculated to be 0.42 ± 0.04 %. Totally, with considering the obtained results, it seems that this herbal extracts of Mentha piperita L. maybe have a good ability to control two-spotted spider mite.
