Abstract:
Cotton spotted bollworm, Earias insulana Boisduval is one of the important insect pests of cotton that is spread in Africa, Southern Europe, the Near and Middle East. At present due to the increasing damage of this pest in some cotton growing regions of Iran and the avoidance of chemical pesticides application in cotton fields, particular attention has been paid to the use of natural eco-friendly methods including the use of synthetic pheromones. E,E-10,12-hexadecadienal has been identified as the sex pheromone of E.insulana. This compound has been synthesized in the Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection (IRIPP) and was loaded into rubber septa dispenser (1×2 cm) with 0.5, 1 and 2 mg loading rates (Concentration: 0.03 mg/µl). We compared the efficacy of different loading rates synthesized pheromones with the one imported from Russell company (United Kingdom) in randomized complete block design with 4 replicates at the cotton fields of Garmsar and Kashmar in 2018. Funnel traps were used and the dispensers were replaced every 4 weeks. The results showed significant differences between treatments. Synthesized pheromone with 1 mg loading rate and imported pheromone had maximum moth catches/trap (11.50±2.78 & 12.87±2.00 mean±SE, respectively). Synthesized pheromone with 2 and 0.5 mg loading rates had significantely less moth catches/trap (4.87±1.34 & 2.62±0.92, respectively). We conclude that 1 mg loading rate dispensers of IRIPP and Russell company placed in the funnel traps are suitable for trapping of E.insulana.
